Curb Your Enthusiasm About Leucovorin

 Jon Hamilton at NPR:

All of this is part of a familiar cycle for Dr. Paul Offit, who directs the vaccine education center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Offit says he realized years ago that leucovorin's popularity was far ahead of the science.

"I saw it for what it was, which was yet the next magic medicine to treat autism, in a long line of magic medicines to treat autism that haven't worked," Offit says.

Offit has chronicled the rise and fall of many of those products in his books and blog posts.

"First it was secretin, an intestinal hormone," he says. "Then it was Lupron, chemical castration, antibiotics, megavitamins, nicotine patches, and my personal favorite, which is raw camel's milk."

Leucovorin is likely to find a place on that cautionary list, Offit says, adding that the FDA has failed to protect the public from an autism remedy that "clearly hasn't been well tested to be effective."

...

Decades ago, the drug became a popular treatment for children with Fragile X syndrome, an inherited condition that affects a region of the X chromosome and is a leading cause of autism.

Until genetic tests for Fragile X arrived in the 1990s, scientists used a microscope to look for "fragile" or "broken" regions on the X chromosome. And they found that those abnormalities were easier to see in brain cells grown in a medium low in folic acid (a synthetic form of folate).

"So the very first, and most obvious theory was that Fragile X must have something to do with folic acid metabolism," says Dr. Michael Tranfaglia, medical director of the FRAXA Research Foundation and parent of an adult child who has the disorder and severe autism.

Parents started giving folic acid to their children with Fragile X. When that didn't work, they moved on to folinic acid — leucovorin.

"There was a lot of excitement about that, until people started doing actual clinical trials," Tranfaglia says. Then it became clear the drug was no better than a placebo.

Now, Tranfaglia says, leucovorin is back.

"It's not terribly surprising," he says, "because for every supplement and every vitamin you can possibly imagine, someone has proposed some kind of link to autism."

Usually, though, that someone is not running the FDA — the agency that determines whether a drug is safe and effective.

Offit v. RFK

In The Politics of Autism, I analyze the myth that vaccines cause autism. This bogus idea can hurt people by allowing diseases to spread.    Examples include measles, COVID, flu, and polio.

A number of posts discussed Trump's support for the discredited notion.

Another leading anti-vaxxer is presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.  He has repeatedly compared vaccine mandates to the Holocaust.  Rolling Stone and Salon retracted an RFK article linking vaccines to autism.  He is part of the "Disinformation Dozen."

He is now Trump's nominee to head HHS.

He is now claiming that he doesn't want to ban vaccines.  Dr. Paul Offit warns us not to trust his confirmation conversion.

RFK Linked Vaccines to Holocaust, Called for Jailing Dr. Paul Offit

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a dark view of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2019, he called the federal agency’s vaccine division a fascist enterprise and accused it of knowingly hurting children. He also compared what he saw as a widespread conspiracy to hide harms from the child vaccination program to the cover-up of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

“The word ‘fascism’ in Italian means a bundle of sticks, and what it means is the bundle is more important than the sticks,” Kennedy said in previously unreported remarks in 2019 to a private audience at AutismOne, a conference for parents of autistic children. “The institution, CDC and the vaccine program, is more important than the children that it’s supposed to protect.

...

Kennedy made these remarks and others — most previously unreported — over years of appearances at AutismOne. The comments, dating back to 2013, include claims that the CDC is a “cesspool of corruption,” filled with profiteers, harming children in a way he also likened to “Nazi death camps.”
...

At the 2013 AutismOne question-and-answer session, when asked about the CDC’s motives for failing to acknowledge autism as an epidemic, Kennedy made a comparison to the Holocaust.

“To me this is like Nazi death camps, what happened to these kids,” Kennedy said of the rising number of children diagnosed with autism and what he described as a link to vaccines — which had been debunked over a decade earlier. “I can’t tell you why somebody would do something like that. I can’t tell you why ordinary Germans participated in the Holocaust.”

He also gave more detail on the people he believed belonged in prison.

“I don’t think this is going to happen because they always manage, the bad guys somehow manage to weasel their way out of it,” he said. “But I would do a lot to see Paul Offit, all these ‘good people,’ behind bars.”

Dr. Paul Offit is the director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the co-inventor of a rotavirus vaccine. He currently serves on a Food and Drug Administration vaccine advisory committee. Asked for comment, Offit said Kennedy had targeted him and others on government vaccine panels for nearly two decades as main characters in baseless conspiracy theories, attacks that have invited harassment and threats.

Offit on RFK Jr.

He recently ran for president as an independent and has now endorsed Trump.  If Trump wins, RFK could get a major job in the administration.

On CNN, vaccine expert Dr. Paul Offit raised alarms about RFK and Project 2025.

Offit on Colbert

Lisa Jo Rudy reports:
Dr. Paul Offit is an immunologist whose books, articles and media appearances have placed him at the center of the autism-vaccine controversy. Offit has argued for years that vaccines have no relationship to the rise in autism spectrum diagnoses, and his point of view has earned him avid supporters as well as death threats. On Monday night, he will appear on Stephen Colbert's tongue-in-cheek "news" comedy, The Colbert Report to speak about his new book, "Deadly Choices: How The Anti-Vaccine Movement Threatens Us All". The show will air on Comedy Central, January 31st at 11:30 EST (the interview will take place toward the end of the program).
One can guess at how the program will go from Colbert's June interview with Michael Specter, author of "Denialism: How Irrational Thinking Hinders Scientific Progress, Harms the Planet, and Threatens Our Lives,"
